This NSF-funded training workshop, co-sponsored by CUAHSI, will teach early-career researchers how to (1) integrate spatial and hydrologic sciences for modeling applications and (2) engage stakeholders to design model outcomes and model communication in a manner meaningful to model users.
Learning Objectives:
Through this workshop, participants will gain training on the following:
- Download a large amount of USGS streamflow and water quality data using programming commands
- Best practices in data management
- Summarizing and aggregating spatial information (land use, tile drainage, climate, etc.) using defined boundaries
- Multiple regression and geographically weighted regression analyses
- Approaches to identify and analyze audiences’ desired model inputs and outputs
- Frameworks for engaging stakeholders (persons interested in research outcomes) throughout the modeling process
- Strategies for communicating complex models
- Methods for gathering feedback
Workshop Eligibility and Requirements:
This course is open to researchers currently pursuing their Ph.D. and early career researchers (within 5 of years of Ph.D.) whose current work would benefit from the skills shared during this workshop.
The curriculum requires participants to be familiar with computer programming in software packages such as Matlab, R, or Python (the workshop will likely be taught using R).
Participants must apply and be accepted to register and participate in this workshop.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Review of applications will begin on May 1, 2025. The final date to submit an application is May 16, 2025.
Participants should plan to bring their own laptop with the software packages already installed. More information will be shared with selected students. For the selected participants, we will hold a Zoom meeting in late Spring/early Summer for introductions and to help guide the workshop content (e.g., prior computer programming experience, stakeholder engagement).
Workshop Location and Cost:
This workshop will be hosted at Northeastern University Marine Science Center, Nahant, MA outside of Boston.
A room block will be arranged for participants. Lunches and local transportation to and from the hotel and venue will be provided.
Travel support and scholarship funding may be available to help defray the cost of participation in the workshop.
