The Research Software Engineer is a key part of a small, collaborative team responsible for creating and maintaining web applications and services in a cloud environment. This role involves working closely with water scientists and engineers, leveraging creativity and innovation to tackle programming challenges to support water science and data access.

Location: Remote

Position Type: Full-time (35-hour workweek)

Salary: $90K-$110K depending on qualifications and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, code, and modify applications to meet client specifications, collaborating with water scientists and engineers on all aspects of software design and coding.
  • Develop new features and visually appealing interfaces to support research projects.
  • Maintain and enhance existing applications, ensuring their reliability and usability, troubleshooting bugs, optimizing performance, and updating libraries and frameworks.
  • Utilize creativity and innovation to independently solve conceptual programming problems raised by cutting-edge water research.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent science degree with proven software engineering skills.
  • Proven experience in engineering high-quality frontend web applications using JavaScript frameworks (preference for Vue).
  • Ability to develop production web applications using popular Python frameworks (such as Django, Flask, FastAPI).
  • Experience in developing and deploying software in commercial cloud environments.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps tools and methodologies, including CI/CD, cloud services, and containerization (Docker or Kubernetes)
  • Strong analytical abilities and complex problem-solving skills.
  • Capability to work both independently and in a team setting.

Experience desired but not required:

  • Exposure, expertise, and/or interest in hydrology and related disciplines in the Earth sciences.
  • Experience with GIS and spatial data.
  • Experience in SQL and NoSQL database management
