General scope: The student will be contributing to assessing compound flood Impacts on groundwater levels in coastal urban communities. More specifically, the student will develop an Adaptive Hydraulics (AdH) model for the city of Tybee Island in Georgia to identify and characterize the processes and variables controlling groundwater level fluctuations in a coastal setting. Also, the student will work with ocean circulation models, such as the ADdvanced CIRCulation (ADCIRC) model. The objectives are to assess future climate change impacts and develop guidelines for designing infiltration-based natural solutions for flood reduction (e.g., rain gardens).

Qualifications: The candidate should hold a BS in Civil/environmental engineering, hydrology, or any related discipline. It should also be interested in numerical modeling of various types of flows, such as surface, subsurface, and ocean circulation. The candidate should be willing to engage in research beyond the traditional bounds of engineering since there will be a strong collaboration with geology and community engagement/outreach events. The candidate must be fluent in English (oral and written). Experience with coastal inundation or hydrologic/hydraulic models is a plus. Although it is not necessary to have all of these skills at the start, the ideal candidate will be willing to learn from others and have the motivation to self-teach skills.

Benefits: The student assistantship includes a full tuition waiver, a competitive stipend, and funds to attend conferences and workshops. Required software and computers will be provided. Funding will be provided for only two years.

Application: Candidates interested in applying to this position should fill out the following form by August 16, 2024. Applications through email will not be accepted. If you have any questions about the position, please contact Dr. Félix Santiago-Collazo by email at email hidden; JavaScript is required with the subject heading “UGA CITRA Graduate Student Inquiry”. Interviews with the selected candidates will start in late August, and the final candidate should be announced by mid-September. The selected candidate must apply and be admitted by mid-October to start in January 2024. The position is open until filled.
