Water Data Portals
The Global Water Information Interest Group (GWIIG) of the Research Data Alliance focused on the organization, representation, publication, sharing, discovery, re-use, and integration of hydrologic information of different types. This effort resulted in the creation of a list of web portals and/or websites with data or links to data on water resources. The portals generally provide data that are at a minimum national in scope, and many of the portals offer global data.
The GWIIG requested that CUAHSI host this list to ensure permanence and wider distribution to the community. CUAHSI is continuously adding to the list based on community input. To suggest a web portal, please email email hidden; JavaScript is required.
Users can scroll through the list of portals below, or use the browse and search tools above.
The list is by no means comprehensive. Feedback or information regarding additional portals can be sent to email hidden; JavaScript is required.
International Centre for Water Resourses and Global Change
site owner:
Geographical Scope: Global
The Global Terrestrial Network for Hydrology (GTN-H) links existing networks and systems for integrated observations of the global water cycle and operates under auspices of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and the World Meteorological Organization / Climate and Water Department (WMO/CLW). The network was established in 2001 as a network of networks to support a range of climate and water resource objectives, building on existing networks and data centres, and producing value-added products through enhanced communications and shared development. The GTN-H website is a gateway to a great number of global observing systems for hydrological data.
International Hydrological Programme’s Water Information Network System
site owner: Unesco
Geographical Scope: global
Entry point to water resources and data (mostly maps and layers) from UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme.
IWRM Data Portal
site owner: UNEP-DHI Partnership
Geographical Scope: global
This data portal offers a comprehensive collection of national IWRM implementation progress data drawn from two global country IWRM progress surveys.
Joint Research Centre Water Portal
site owner: European Commission
Geographical Scope: Europe, partly global
The JRC water portal serves as the gateway to JRC’s products on freshwater and marine water resources, providing access to water data, publications, and maps, as well as to water projects and events. Some of the links in the JRC Activities Portals are not functional anymore.
Jupiter (National well database)
site owner: Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland
Geographical Scope: Denmark
Jupiter is GEUS’ nationwide database for groundwater, drinking water, raw materials, environmental and geotechnical data. The database is the common public database within the field and is part of Denmark's Environment Portal.
Mekong and Red River Water Forecasting System
site owner: Vietnam National Water Resources Planning and Investigation (NAWAPI)
Geographical Scope: South East Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos)
A transboundary reservoir and river flow forecasting system for Mekong and Red River basins.
Monitor My Watershed
site owner: Stroud Water Research Center
Geographical Scope:
Monitor My Watershed is a data portal that allows you to share and explore do-it-yourself environmental monitoring data. It currently hosts EnviroDIY™ sensor data and Leaf Pack Network macroinvertebrate data. Monitor My Watershed is part of Stroud Water Research Center’s WikiWatershed toolkit.
National long-term surveillance of Swiss rivers
site owner: Eawag
Geographical Scope: Switzerland
Long term data series collected as part of the program “National Long-Term Surveillance of Swiss Rivers” (NADUF).
National River Flow Archive
site owner: Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH); Research Centre of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
Geographical Scope: UK
UK's focal point for river flow data. The NRFA collates, quality controls, and archives hydrometric data from gauging station networks across the UK.
Open Water Data Initiative
site owner: Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC)
Geographical Scope: USA
The OWDI seeks to integrate currently fragmented water information into a connected, national water data framework by leveraging existing systems, infrastructure and tools to underpin innovation, modeling, data sharing, and solution development.
